Weigh in with Haggas hope Call To Mind; Pricewise TOM SEGAL Call To Mind12.30 Chantilly 1pt win at 9-2 with Betway & 188Bet Gold Luck4.42 Chantilly 1pt win at 11-1 with Betway (10-1 generally).
APART from Brametot, who ran really badly last time, the French three-year-olds have looked a moderate bunch this season. British-trained horses had a field day at Deauville and there is no reason why that trend should not continue at Chantilly.
The first test of that theory comes in the Qatar Prix Chaudenay (12.30), when locally trained favourite Darbuzan takes on William Haggas's Call To Mind.
Darbuzan, who has won his last three, stays well and acts on soft ground but has not beaten a horse of any note and is priced up like he has.
He can only beat the horses fielded against him and there is surely more to come, but Call To Mind stayed on well when third to Defoe at Hamilton and improved again when comfortably accounting for Count Octave at Goodwood.
Count Octave was a neck second to Stradivarius in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot and was beaten only just over five lengths in the St Leger. That is way ahead of anything Darbuzan has achieved.
The race of the day could be the Qatar Prix du Cadran (4.12) provided Big Orange is allowed to take his chance on the ground. Whether he can cope with Vazirabad is a different matter and with only seven runners there isn't any each-way juice.
Having said the French three-year-olds aren't much cop, one who might be worth backing is Gold Luck in the Qatar Prix Daniel Wildenstein (4.42).
Hathal, the sole British horse in the line-up, is good but not brilliant and Gold Luck finished on the heels of Taareef in the Group 1 Jacques le Marois last time.
She pulled too hard off a pedestrian pace and, while Taareef will be hard to beat, I don't think the price difference between the pair should be as great as it is.
