Weekender Shopping: Budding romance.

Byline: edited by RUKI SAYID

IF you're thinking of sending flowers on Valentine's Day - make sure you pick wisely.

A dozen expensive red roses is the traditional way to say "I love you" but new research says a third of women find them boring and predictable.

A study by the Post Office claims women would rather have a soothing green and white bouquet and 90 per cent prefer receiving flowers at home rather than at work.

And, apparently, blooms have hidden meanings. For passion, there's the heart-shaped red anthurium; orchids represent beauty and charm and chrysanthmums mean friendship, joy and truth. Choose veronica for fidelity and freesias for trust - but stay away from striped carnations - they signify "it's over".

If choosing flowers is a bit of a minefield, there's still time to buy your sweetheart something different. Marks and Spencer has a huge range of gifts like classy but sexy lingerie with the very pretty Truly You bra at pounds 20 and matching thong for pounds 8.

Or there's funky heart keyrings and rose-scented pot pourri both at pounds 8. Look out for Eve's Temptation apples at Waitrose. At 59p each loose or pounds 1.99 in a gift box, they are naturally stencilled with a heart motif and framed by what looks like Mick Jagger's lips

For a tea time treat, Tesco has show stealing puff pastry lovehearts with fresh cream and straw berries for pounds 4.99. Or Asda has fresh strawberries in a heart-shaped container for pounds 1.78. Asda also has fluffy heart and lip-shaped cushions from pounds 3.47 and under a tenner gifts from notebook and pen sets to jewellery boxes. And there are a range of pin-money love tokens like jelly hearts from 99p to cuddly toys from pounds 4.99 at Woolworths. So, no excuses on Monday morning!
