The Quangle Wangle's Hat by Edward Lear (Walker, pounds 4.99)

HOW such madness and imagination can be contained in such classic verse has always been a mystery to me.

But I think Edward Lear is just fantastic.

This is a fabulous new edition of this favourite poem in which we meet such well-known characters as the Dong with the Luminous Nose, the Blue Baboon and, of course, the Quangle Wangle.

The rhyme still dances off the page as much as it ever did and children new to Lear will be in fits. Illustrator Louise Voce has clearly delighted in giving them new life.

Young Bond: Blood Fever by Charlie Higson (Puffin, pounds 6.99)

AND you thought James Bond has thrilling adventures now?

They are nothing compared with those he enjoyed as a teenager.

Following on from the huge success of Silverfin, Blood Fever is the second in this exciting series.

A 13-year-old James is enjoying his membership of the elite Danger Club at his school, Eton College.

But not for long.

He is soon whisked off to the sunnier climes of Sardinia, where he suspects that one of his teachers is trying to kill him - and that an ancient secret organisation is terrorising the country.

Some sinister characters and none stop action make this a racing read for nine plusses. Boys especially will dream of emulating the young spy.
