Weather warning for coast areas.

TYNESIDE is bracing itself for strong winds today.

Forecasters were predicting a swathe of gales brewing in the North East overnight and sweeping across the region over the next 24 to 48 hours.

The Met Office has put out a yellow severe weather warning, while South Tyneside Council also warned of potentially dangerous conditions in coastal areas.

A council spokesperson said: "Over the next 24 to 48 hours, South Tyneside is expected to receive unseasonal low temperatures and strong gale force northerly winds of up to 50-60 mph.

"This may result in some high waves of four to five metres in places, and the public are advised to be careful when walking along coastal areas.

"We are well prepared for all severe weather conditions in the borough and any potential impacts this may bring."

The Met Office said last night: "A swathe of strong winds is expected to develop across North East England through the early hours of Friday.

"The public should be aware of the potential for some minor disruption to travel."
