We love telly: We love science - SMASH LAB DISCOVERY, 10pm.

Byline: by JANE SIMON

I KNOW there are a lot of you out there whose ideal TV experience is watching earnest Americans trying to hide their excitement that they're getting paid to blow stuff up.

The sort of show you find stacked end to end on the Discovery Channel on any given hangover Sunday.

Unlike Myth Busters, Smash Lab tries to assume the mantle of serious science. Tonight's goal is to see whether aerated concrete can slow runaway cars in the same way it does planes.

Really though the whole point is to send remote-controlled cars (and one bus) tearing down a runway into a pile of other cars.

Happily, there are lots of failures and plenty of satisfying slow-motion crashes.

One of the team even has the smash-tactic name Chuck Messer - what's the chances?
