We can't 'poo poo' poo bags; WITH MARTIN PATERSON OF DONALDSON'S VETS vet 's corner.

I LOVE dogs.

Since I was a small child, dogs have always been a huge part of my life.

For the last 23 years, I have spent all my working time with dogs and, when I go home, I choose to spend my time with my three Labradors - Bramble, Blossom and Fennel.

In my free time, I like nothing better than walking my dogs, and yet there is one thing I really dislike about dogs and that is DOG POO!!

Picking up your dog's mess is an important part of being a responsible dog owner. The majority of dog owners carry poo bags wherever they go.

Picking up a dog's dirt and disposing of it responsibly is second nature to most dog owners. The minority of irresponsible dog owners who do not clean up after their dogs give all dog owners a bad name.

Remember to always carry a poo bag with you whenever you take your dog out.

Tie one to your lead so that you always have a spare one with you.

There are now lots of designated poo bins or you can dispose of your poo bags in a public litter bin.

Don't discard your used poo bags for someone else to pick up - plastic bags left discarded can be even more unsightly than the faeces they contain.

It is important to keep sight of your dog at all times when you are in a public space so that your dog is safe and also so you can see when and where they poo - you can only pick it up if you can find it!

If you see someone in need of a poo bag, offer them one of yours..and if you are in need of a poo bag, ask a fellow dog walker if you could use one of theirs.

Poo bags are not expensive. By not picking up your dog's mess, you are committing an offence. If you are caught, you could be prosecuted and fined up to PS1,000. That is A LOT of poo bags!!

Remember to wash your hands after your walk. Dog faeces can contain worms that can be a threat to human health.

For advice about treating your dog against worms, contact your vet.
