We are confident that Abas would carry out his duties with integrity -- Palace.

By Genalyn Kabiling

Malacanang is confident that Commission on Elections (COMELEC) chair Sheriff Abas would perform his duty with integrity and competence after getting the nod of the Commission on Appointments (CA).

"We welcome the confirmation of the appointment of Commissioner Sheriff M. Abas as the new Commission on Elections Chairperson," Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said in a statement.

"We are confident that Chairperson Abas would carry out his duties with integrity, excellence and competence to regain public trust in the electoral body," he added.

The powerful CA confirmed Wednesday the appointment of Abas as COMELEC chairman with a term until February 2, 2022.

Abas, who replaced resigned Andres Bautista, became the first Muslim COMELEC chief as well as the youngest to hold such government post at 39.

Abas, a law graduate from Ateneo de Davao University, was appointed to the top COMELEC post by President Duterte last November.
