Wayne Allwine; OBITUARY.

FOR A big-time movie star, Wayne Allwine would pass remarkably un-noticed in the street.

But, if he ever needed to prove anything, he had only to start talking for instant recognition. For here, behind the manly beard and twinkling eyes, was the high-pitched squeak of Mickey Mouse.

He was actually the third Mickey, following in the footsteps of his creator Walt Disney and the character actor Jimmy Macdonald.

But he made Mickey his own for more than 30 years.

Wayne Allwine had joined Disney in 1966 as a teenage helper in the post room, moving on to the special effects department.

He took over Mickey's voice in 1977, coached by Macdonald. He first voiced Mickey for television that year, and in a feature film, Mickey's Christmas Carol, six years later.

He doubled up Mickey's voice with work as a sound effects editor for films from Three Men and a Baby to Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and won an Emmy award for his sound editing on Amazing Stories for television.

Allwine recalled how Jimmy Macdonald had briefed him when he first took over the role.

"He said, 'Just remember kid, you're only filling in for the boss.' And that's the way he treated doing Mickey for years and years." "Mickey's the real star," Allwine continued. "You know you just have to love the little guy while you have him, because he won't be yours forever." "Wayne dedicated his entire professional life to Disney," chief executive Robert Iger said.

"Over the last 32 years, he gave so much joy, happiness and comfort to so many around the world by giving voice to our most beloved Mickey Mouse." Roy Disney, director emeritus for The Walt Disney Company, said Allwine did more than give Mickey a voice. He "gave him a heart and soul as well." "He did an incredible job of bringing emotion, humour and appeal to the character, and superbly carried on the tradition originated by my Uncle Walt, and later by Jimmy Macdonald." Wayne Allwine, actor and sound effects specialist; born, February 7, 1947, died, May 18, 2009
