Waters acquires Creon Lab Control. (Executive briefing: news, trends & market intelligence for instrument executives).

Milford, MA 7/30/03--Waters has acquired Creon Lab Control AG for approximately $16 million. Creon Lab Control is an application platform company for the chemical, pharmaceutical and life science industry, with forecasted 2003 revenues of $10 million. Its products include laboratory management information systems (LIMS), electronic notebook systems, and systems for electronic record management and analytical workflow management. Waters stated that the company's electronic lab notebook and laboratory data management software complements Waters' Empower Chromatography software and MassLynx software for lab informatics. "We have taken a major step in strengthening our position as the partner of choice for the analytical marketplace. CLC's products will extend Waters' market-leading position in data management software to deliver the most comprehensive and integrated solutions for today's labs," said Waters Division President Art Caputo. The companies will tighten their field sales association and development integration.

With this acquisition, Waters expands its software business. As with PerkinElmer's purchase of LABWORKS (see IBO 3/ 15/01) and Thermo Electron and Agilent's emphasis on software offerings, Waters has sought to bring even more software expertise in-house. Waters has stayed on the sidelines for several years while LIMS businesses have been acquired by the competition. However, Creon is really more of a lab data management company than a LIMS provider, so the wait has paid off.
