Waste Management Inc. Appoints Linda J. Smith to Corporate Secretary.

Waste Management Inc. (NYSE:WMI) today announced the appointment of Linda J. Smith to corporate secretary.

Smith has served as Waste Management's assistant corporate secretary since April 2000. In her role as corporate secretary, she plans and administers the meetings of the Company's board of directors and its committees. She also administers the Company's various stock option plans, maintains the Company's subsidiary records, manages the preparation of the proxy statement for the annual meeting of stockholders, and coordinates stockholder and transfer agent issues. Smith reports to Rick Wittenbraker, senior vice president, general counsel and chief compliance officer for Waste Management.

"Linda has done an outstanding job in every way," said Wittenbraker. "She is a key member of our legal leadership team, and we are pleased to promote her to the position of Corporate Secretary."

Prior to joining Waste Management, Smith was corporate secretary and legal compliance officer for Baker Hughes Incorporated. She was with Baker Hughes for more than 28 years and held several positions within the company, serving more than 21 years in the legal department.

Smith holds a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. She was a founding member of the Greater Houston Business Ethics Roundtable and is an active member of the Houston Chapter of American Society of Corporate Secretaries, serving as president for the 1999-2000 season.
