Washing up liquid best on rug stains; RESEARCH.

A CHEAP washing up liquid used on stubborn carpet marks knocked the spots off a branded stain remover, costing eight times more.

Morning Fresh, at 78p a bottle, was better at tackling red wine, Ribena and blood than specialist Bissell Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner costing pounds 6.70, says Which?

In tests, the diluted dish cleaner was also as good as top brands like Vanish, 1001 and De-Solv-It.

Researchers tested 17 popular stain removers along with two home-made remedies - diluted washing up liquid and soda water.

Sainsbury's pounds 2.43 Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner topped the poll and Tesco's Carpet and Upholstery for pounds 2.44 came third.

The only brand in the top three was Rug Doctor Spot and Stain Remover for pounds 2.99.
