SEVEN bikes were stolen in just over 24 hours in Ashington.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the spate of thefts.

Between 5.15pm on Tuesday, April 5 and 6.05am on Wednesday, April 6, a Fuji road bike, Forme cross bike, Eastway Hybrid bike and a Carrera mountain bike were stolen from Saint Andrew's Terrace.

At around 6.30pm on Wednesday, April 6, a black mountain bike was stolen from College Road.

Between 8.15pm on Wednesday, April 6 and 6.05am yesterday morning, a Carrera mountain bike was stolen from a garden shed in Heatherhope.

At 8.50pm on Wednesday, April 5 a diamond black mountain bike was stolen from The Cree.

In addition, at 6.30am yesterday morning, police received a report of an attempted bike theft in College Road. The offender made off empty handed.

Police are appealing for witnesses to these crimes or anyone with information about the whereabouts of the bikes to come forward. Neighbourhood Sergeant, Michael Aspey, said: "The majority of bike thefts can be avoided if cyclists ensured their bikes were secured. Unfortunately there are opportunist thieves who will take advantage if they see a bike propped up against a wall or lying in a garden."
