Ware Named Editor of The Sun in Bremerton.

Brewer Promoted to Editor of The Albuquerque Tribune

CINCINNATI, July 14 /PRNewswire/ --

Scott Ware, editor of The Albuquerque Tribune, has been named editor of The Sun in Bremerton, Wash., effective Aug. 1.

Kelly Brewer, The Tribune's managing editor, will succeed Ware as editor in Albuquerque, also effective Aug. 1. Ware succeeds Brian Stallcop, who is leaving The Sun to become a stockbroker.

"Scott Ware is a creative and thoughtful newsroom executive who throughout his career has demonstrated his commitment to quality journalism," said Alan M. Horton, senior vice president of newspapers for Scripps. "He brings a wealth of ideas and experience with him to Bremerton, which reflects our commitment at Scripps to deliver one of the Northwest's finest local newspapers."

"Kelly Brewer, Scott's successor in Albuquerque, is equally dedicated to fair, useful and interesting news coverage," Horton said. "Also, she's a New Mexican and she's committed to editing a thought-provoking newspaper that's intensely local in focus. Kelly has been instrumental in helping The Tribune earn many awards and recognition for remarkable journalism."

The Tribune has been a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize (1996) and was a first-place winner in the 1998 and 2001 National Headliner Awards. The Tribune also was the winner of three first-place awards in the Best of Scripps annual contest for 2000, more than any other Scripps newspaper.

Ware, 47, has been editor of The Tribune since 1995. He came to Albuquerque from San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he had served first as managing editor (1991-92) then editor (1992-94) of The San Juan Star, formerly a Scripps newspaper. He joined Scripps in 1975 as a reporter for The Commercial Appeal in Memphis. During his 16 years in Memphis, he also served as city editor, news editor and night managing editor.

Ware began his career in 1970 at his hometown newspaper, The Meridian (Miss.) Star, while still in high school, working first as a proofreader and copy boy and then as a sports and news reporter. He has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Mississippi.

Brewer, 41, has been managing editor of The Albuquerque Tribune since 1999. She first joined the newspaper in 1983 as a reporter and copy editor. After working briefly as a student newspaper adviser at the University of California at San Francisco, Brewer returned to The Tribune and has since served as the newspaper's assistant managing editor, assistant news editor and news editor.

A 1982 graduate of the University of New Mexico, Brewer also has worked as a reporter for The Associated Press (1982-83) and as a freelance book editor, with a concentration on behavioral and social science textbooks published by Basic Books, Lexington Books and McGraw Hill.
