MARCOLA - A man wanted on allegations of rape, assault and burglary eluded police Thursday when he abandoned his Jeep and ran barefoot through a wooded area east of Marcola.

Eugene police described John Allen Robertson, 45, as armed and dangerous and asked people to call 911 if they see him.

Police had been searching for Robertson for about two months, police spokeswoman Pam Olshanski said. He was spotted driving a maroon Jeep on Camp Creek and Marcola roads about noon Thursday.

Officers chased him, and the pursuit reached speeds as high as 80 mph, Olshanski said. After driving off-road for a while, Robertson left the Jeep and ran into the woods without any shoes, police said.

Eugene police activated the county's community emergency notification system, which uses telephone lines to deliver warning messages to homes and businesses near potentially dangerous activity.

Officers also visited area schools to reassure parents and students and answer any questions. No schools were locked down or otherwise affected.

Officers from Eugene and other area police agencies searched for the man for hours, with no success.

The alleged rape occurred in Lane County within the last two months, Olshanski said. The assault and burglary occurred in Coos County. Robertson also is wanted on several warrants for contempt of Lane County Circuit Court.

Robertson is white, about 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds. He has brown curly hair, hazel eyes and was last seen with a mustache, although he may have shaved since eluding police. Police don't have a current address for Robertson, but he's known to frequent the Eugene-Springfield area, Olshanski said.
