Wall and rooms zig-zag through the house's middle.

Zigging and zagging its way down the spine of Pat and David Long's house is a wall that establishes angles repeated in the flanking rooms. Portland architect James Oliver uses this wall to produce surprising room shapes in a house plan which has, for the most part, a traditional rectangular perimeter.

The wall juts in and out at 45[deg.] angles along most of the house's center line (see plan). Instead of a solid wall, Oliver used big interior windows near the ceiling so adjacent rooms can share light from three 4-foot-square skylights.

At floor level, one side of the wall creates triangular spaces for a wet bar, a kitchen office, and stairs to the master bedroom. On the other side are a large master closet and bath. Oliver echoes the angle in the large kitchen island, a wall flanking a pantry, and one outside wall.

As a counterpoint to the angles, a 5-foot-wide, 56-foot-long plant shelf runs above the central hallway. To achieve the long, unsupported spans, the shelf was framed in steel beams. Downlighting canisters are built into the underside of the shelf.
