Wales will wrestle with sumo scrum idea.

WALES are ready to make their scrum even stronger next season... by learning lessons from the Japanese sport of sumo wrestling.

The set-piece, the foundation behind the 30-3 Six Nations title blitzing of England, has become a real strength of the Welsh game in recent times.

But Wales reckon they can take things onto another level again by mirroring some of the techniques of the sumo men.

Props Rhys Gill and Ryan Bevington were amongst a group of Welsh players who went to see a sumo training camp in Tokyo. Bevington even had a go, donning the traditional mawashi loincloth.

It was an experience that left them suitably impressed, as Saracens front-rower Gill confirmed.

"You think the sumo wrestlers are not athletes, but they are actually machines. Fair play to them, they are unbelievable," said Gill.

"They are big strong guys and they work ridiculously hard. One guy was crying at the end, he was actually in tears and the coach was still hitting him with a stick shouting at him and telling him to get up!

"The power comes from their legs, but there's loads of technique with it as well, with regards to where to hit each other and stuff.

"There have some heavy old collisions. It's pretty much like scrummaging.
