Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans a major push to expand in Germany under its own steam. The world's largest retailer is planning to add 50 new stores to the 95 it already operates in Germany and double its share of the hypermarket sector to 20 percent within three years. As Europe's biggest retail market Germany is critical to Wal-Mart's European strategy. While Wal-Mart recently purchased UK supermarket chain Asda and is open to opportunities in other European countries, industry analysts believe the U.S. retailer has room to grow in Germany because it is more focused on containing costs and satisfying customers than its local rivals.
