WYSE RAISES STANDARDS AND LOWERS ENTRY PRICE IN GENERAL PURPOSE TERMINALS MARKET

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Wyse Technology Inc., the world's leading terminals manufacturer, today introduced the WY-55, setting a new price/performance standard in the low-end general purpose terminals market. The WY-55's features include more than 10 ASCII/ANSI emulations as well as PCTerm and UNIX console modes. In particular, the WY-55 incorporates the features of the industry standard WY-50, as well as a WY-60 native mode, multiple keyboard options, faster throughput, and ergonomic packaging and display enhancements.
"The added flexibility and ergonomic design at low cost help set the WY-55 apart as a leader in today's low-end, low-cost general purpose terminals market," said Art Lipton, Wyse senior vice president and general manager of terminals and display products. "By ensuring compatibility with the standard WY-50, customers can easily add to or replace their existing terminal installations with the WY-55."
 Multiple Personalities Provide Maximum Flexibility
The WY-55 is designed to work in a broad range of mini, mainframe and multiuser PC environments. It is compatible with SCO UNIX, VMS, PICK and multi-user DOS applications. In addition to the WY-50 personality, other emulations include WY-60, WY-120, WY-150, DEC's VT220, Televideo 925, and ADDS Viewpoint A2, to name a few. The WY-55 comes with two serial ports with up to 115.2 Kbaud rate, performance typically reserved for high-end terminals. Multiple keyboard options are also available, including ASCII, ANSI, Enhanced PC or International Enhanced PC keyboards. Terminal drivers for the WY-55 are available on both Wyse Technology's and SCO's bulletin board systems.
 World Class Ergonomic Standards
The WY-55 meets the same high ergonomic standards as Wyse's other terminals. It supports the International Standards Organization (ISO) 9241-3 user interface compliance requirements and reaches an 80Hz refresh rate, which produces flicker-free viewing in its crisp high- resolution mode. An overscan borderless screen also contributes to viewing comfort. The WY-55 comes with a choice of green, amber or paper- white phosphors on a 14-inch nonglare, flat screen. A standard tilt-and- swivel base that allows comfortable viewing with easy screen positioning is standard, as is a detachable keyboard with mechanical key switches for superior touch and feel. A "Rest Timer" feature can be programmed to display a "rest" message at set intervals. The WY-55 comes with an EPROM access door, making it easy to upgrade firmware. The WY-55ES, the low emissions version, offers the same features as the WY-55, plus full compliance with the MPR 1990:10 Swedish electromagnetic emission guidelines.
 Introductory Promotion, Pricing and Availability
The WY-55 is available immediately in North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. The United States MSRP is $349 for the standard WY-55 and $389 for the low emissions version, the WY-55ES. Until Dec. 31, 1993, Wyse will be offering an introductory price of $199 for the first WY-55 that customers purchase. For more information, call Wyse Technology Inc. at 800-GET-WYSE.
