WYSE INTRODUCES PC BASED ON NEW INTEL486(TM) DX2 MICROPROCESSOR
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Wyse Technology announced today a 50MHz PC based on the Intel486(TM) DX2 microprocessor, announced today by Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC). Called the DECISION 486/50DX2, the powerful PC provides high performance, flexibility and expandability, and will be available next quarter in four configurations. The introduction strengthens the high end of Wyse's DECISION PC family, which ranges from a 4.5-pound 20 MHz Intel 386SX notebook up to the new system.
Wyse also announced that it will offer additional products based on the new Intel technology in its uniprocessor and multiprocessor lines, including a 66 MHz PC, in the second half of 1992.
"This represents the next generation in 486 computing," said Rich Wesson, vice president of business development for Wyse's Systems Division. "By using Intel's speed doubler technology, which allows the internal speed of the processor to be double that of the rest of the system, we can dramatically shorten our development cycle and make these powerful systems available to customers more quickly."
The new PC is targeted at environments that demand high powered computing performance, such as Microsoft Windows 3.0, computer-aided design and engineering, multimedia and multiuser applications.
With 128KB external memory cache and 8KB internal memory cache, the DECISION 486/50DX2 takes advantage of how the new Intel microprocessor works optimally with fast cache systems. The external cache enables the processor to access RAM data with no wait states up to 98 percent of the time, thus optimizing performance in large UNIX and Windows applications. The PC provides flexibility in an expandable desktop package with support for 32 MB of RAM on the motherboard; seven available slots for storage devices, peripherals and accessory boards; and four mass storage bays.
"The expandability and flexibility of this PC makes the system especially attractive for the value added reseller channel, where we are a leader in providing PCs," Wesson said.
As with all of Wyse's DECISION models, the new PC offers additional advanced features designed to meet end user needs. It runs a Wyse-enhanced version of the PC-compatible Phoenix BIOS with features such as a ROM setup, user-definable drive types, and automatic hard disk drive configuration that increases convenience and reduces set-up time.
Users have a choice of 3 1/2-inch or 5 1/4-inch floppy disk drives, and both ATE and ESDI disk drives and controllers are available. The system has a power supply large enough to run fully loaded systems, allowing full utilization of expansion slots and providing significant RAM expandability on the system motherboard.
Specifications for the four configurations follow. List prices will be announced closer to availability. Single-Diskette Systems (2)
Includes a single 5 1/4-inch 1.2MB or 3 1/2-inch 1.44MB diskette drive, an interface for up to two AT embedded-controller hard disk drives (no additional controller card or cables required), 2 MB RAM installed, advanced 128KB cache, 200-watt international power supply, two serial ports, one parallel printer port, keyboard and MS-DOS 5 120MB Hard Disk System
In addition to standard configuration features, this model includes a one-inch 120MB AT embedded-controller hard disk drive 300 MB ESDI Hard Disk System
In addition to standard configuration features, this model includes one 5 1/4-inch 300MB (16ms) ESDI hard disk drive with high- performance ESDI controller (occupies one ISA bus slot and includes cabling to support an additional internal ESDI hard disk drive)
