SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Adding to its server line for open system computing environments, Wyse Technology Inc. today introduced the Series 6000i Model 650, a mid-range uniprocessor system. The server will be available pre-installed with the choice of Wyse's USL UNIX SVR4.0, SCO's UNIX SVR3.2 Version 4.2, DOS 6.0, Microsoft's Windows NT or Windows NT Advanced Server, and is also certified to run Sunsoft's Solaris, Univel's UnixWare, Novell's NetWare and other open operating systems. The scalable platform will be offered in customer-definable hardware configurations, and will be featured at the SCO FORUM trade show in Booth No. 217 as well as conference registration activities.
"The Series 6000i Model 650 addresses our reseller customer's needs for high-performance, flexible systems compatible with a variety of operating environments," said Jack Kister, director of product marketing for Wyse's Systems Division. "Our goal is to save resellers time and money by providing systems that are tailored to their specifications."
Supporting up to 32 users, the mid-range Series 6000i Model 650 server is targeted at small and medium-sized business workgroups. In Wyse administered AIM III benchmarks tests, the high-performance system achieved the best price/performance score in the single Intel CPU category when compared to the 26 systems listed in the Summer 1993 AIM Technology performance guide.
Based on Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA), the system ships standard with a 66MHz i486DX2 CPU. Industry standard components throughout the system allow easy upgrades as processing needs increase. The standard 4MB of RAM is expandable to 128MB, and for superior server performance, the standard 256KB cache is expandable to 512KB.
Housed in a tower chassis that can be opened without tools, the Series 6000i Model 650 supports a Small Computer System Interface-2 (SCSI-2) for high data throughput. The server supports drives over 1GB and ships with an optional 525MB SCSI tape drive. Six available EISA slots and six half-height storage shelves accept a variety of peripherals certified through Wyse's Unity Partner Program, including EISA bus multiport boards from Digiboard and Specialix. An optional Hyper16 local bus video board optimizes video for graphical user interface and system administration applications and is bundled in SCO UNIX configurations. The Series 6000i Model 650 includes password and physical security features for data protection.
Systems are available immediately. The estimated selling price starts at $2,960 for a base system. A fully configured system with an estimated selling price of $6,475 includes; a 66MHz i486DX2 CPU, 16MB RAM, 256KB cache, a 1.44MB 3.5-inch floppy diskette, a 1GB SCSI-2 hard disk drive, a 525MB SCSI tape drive and choice of Wyse's USL UNIX SVR4.0 or SCO UNIX SVR3.2 Version 4.2.
The system is also available in customized versions through Wyse's configure-to-order program. Customers can specify size and type of system memory, cache, diskette drives and hard disk drives. The specified operating system is loaded and tested at the Wyse configuration center before the system is shipped. Windows NT and Windows NT Advance Server configurations will be available later this quarter.
The Series 6000i Model 650 is supported with a full, one year on- site service contract with upgrades to four hour response times available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Complete support for the operating system and hardware is provided by Wyse for total solution support.
At the SCO FORUM, AccuReg will automate registration activities on the new Series 6000i Model 650 running SCO's Open Desktop Release 3.0, Informix's OnLine database and AccuReg's registration software package. The new system will also be demonstrated in Wyse Booth No. 217, operating Microsoft's Windows NT and SCO's Open Desktop environments linked via LAN Manager.
