WYSE ENHANCES UNIX LINE WITH NEW ENTRY-LEVEL OFFERINGS
AND SOFTWARE SERVICE AND SUPPORT PROGRAM
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Wyse Technology announced today the extension of its line of UNIX(R) multiuser systems with the introduction of two new products, a single processor multiuser system and a kit enabling Wyse's Decision 386/40 personal computer to run the company's version of UNIX System Laboratories' (USL) UNIX System V Release 3.2. The company also announced a software support program for its UNIX product family.
The products expand Wyse's offering of low-end UNIX systems, providing a broader range of choices for users moving into UNIX environments. The new Series 6000i Model 640 supports up to 32 users and is suitable for small businesses, workgroups and development environments. The Decision 386/40 UNIX and Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) kit is designed for application developers and small business workgroup environments of up to 16 users. By filling out the low end of Wyse's line, the new products complement the existing midrange and high-end multiprocessing systems, including the Series 7000i and Series 9000i. Operating Wyse's version of USL's industry standard UNIX System V/386, the new products maintain binary compatibility with the rest of the company's UNIX-based systems.
"Users often want to take advantage of UNIX-based applications, but can't afford to or don't need as much power as many systems offer," said Rich Wesson, vice president of business development in Wyse's Systems Division. "Our new systems are cost-effective solutions for those users."
The Series 6000i Model 640 has standard features previously available only on more expensive, complex minicomputer systems. The 33MHz Intel i486 processor is rated at 27 million instructions per second (MIPS) and is integrated with an 80387-compatible math coprocessor and 8KB of internal cache memory. It also has 128KB of external cache and 8MB of system memory, which is expandable to 16MB.
The UNIX and SCSI kit upgrades the Wyse Decision 386/40 desktop PC to become the lowest priced member of Wyse's UNIX-based product family. In addition to Wyse's version of USL's UNIX System V/386, the kit provides all the components necessary to establish a SCSI I/O subsystem, including the SCSI controller, 150MB cartridge tape drive, peripheral cable and a choice of a 200MB or 420MB hard disk drive, which is further expandable to more than 600MB. The Decision 386/40 is based on Advanced Micro Devices' 40 MHz AM386DXL processor.
Currently available, more than 100 units of the Series 6000i Model 640 have been shipped. The base model is priced at $9,625. The UNIX and SCSI kit with a 200MB hard disk drive is priced at $4,175 and is also available now.
The new software service and support program provides a 90-day warranty and a flexible credit system, which allows the broad range of Wyse resellers and end users to adjust their support costs based on their individual needs. The new program supports Wyse's enhanced operating system software and applications developed by the company for its UNIX-based systems. The credit system complements the 90-day end user software warranty, which provides remedial operation system support. Through the use of credits, a VAR or end user may speed up response time to questions during the 90-day warranty period and receive ongoing support after the period.
Unlike competitors' programs, Wyse's credit system allows VARs and end users to choose how much they want to spend on support by purchasing only the number of credits they need, rather than paying a flat rate for support services. The suggested list price for an individual credit is one dollar. The credit certificates are sold in denominations of 100, 250, and 500 credits.
Wyse Technology is a leading supplier of microprocessor-based products, which include terminals, IBM PC-compatible computers, monitors and multiuser systems. The company sells its products through customers that add value, such as distributors, value added resellers and original equipment manufacturers. Headquartered in San Jose, Wyse operates sales offices across the United States and Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and Western Europe.
