WYSE ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR IBM'S OS/2 FOR SYMMETRIC MULTIPROCESSING; WYSE SMP SERVERS USED AS DEVELOPMENT PLATFORMS

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Reaffirming its commitment to provide customers with the maximum choices in certified multiprocessing operating systems, Wyse Technology Inc. today announced support for IBM's OS/2 for Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP). Wyse's Series 7000i symmetric multiprocessing servers are being used as development and test platforms in the development of OS/2 SMP and will be demonstrated with the new operating system in IBM's booth at Comdex.
"As a provider of open systems-based symmetric multiprocessing systems, Wyse is pleased to be IBM's development partner in the SMP version of OS/2," said Aziz Valliani, vice president and general manager of Wyse's Systems Division. "Current users of OS/2 can now benefit from the improved performance and investment protection that an SMP solution provides."
Wyse SMP Platforms Support Greatest Number of MP Operating Systems
OS/2 SMP will join the industry's broadest line of multiprocessing operating systems ported and certified to run on Wyse's SMP server platform. Wyse's Series 7000i SMP servers are certified for UNIX Systems Group's UNIX SVR4, The Santa Cruz Operation's SCO MPX, Microsoft's Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server and SunSoft's Solaris.
"No other SMP platform supports more shrink-wrapped MP operating systems than Wyse's SMP servers," stated Valliani.
Because Wyse's SMP technology is a stable, proven architecture, the third-generation Series 7000i SMP servers, based on Intel i486 and Pentium processors, have been used as development and test platforms for UNIX SVR4, Windows NT and Solaris, as well as OS/2 SMP.
Current certified uniprocessor systems for OS/2 include Wyse's client families, the Decision 486si and Decision 486se, and server families, the Series 3000i Model 350 and Series 6000i Model 650. With the additional certification of OS/2 SMP, Wyse provides users with a range of hardware from desktop client systems to symmetric multiprocessing systems for the OS/2 environment.
Beta versions of OS/2 SMP will be available from IBM's Personal Software Products division in December.
Wyse's Systems Division is committed to supplying industry-standard, client/server computing solutions for open system environments, including USG and SCO UNIX and Microsoft Windows NT. Its broad product offerings include multiprocessing chip sets, client systems and uniprocessor and symmetric multiprocessor servers that feature price/performance advantages. In addition to distribution, Wyse systems are sold through value added resellers who create customized turnkey solutions for the commercial systems environment.
Wyse Technology is a leading independent supplier of microprocessor- based products, which include terminals, monitors and open systems-based clients and multiprocessor servers. The company sells its products through distributors, value added resellers and original equipment manufacturers. Headquartered in San Jose, Wyse operates sales offices across the United States and in Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Europe.
