WYSE ANNOUNCES LOW-COST, FEATURE-RICH TERMINAL FOR ANSI DEC MARKET

WYSE ANNOUNCES LOW-COST, FEATURE-RICH TERMINAL FOR ANSI DEC MARKET
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Wyse Technology, the world's leading independent terminals manufacturer, today announced a terminal that provides the functionality of the Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) VT420 terminal with several additional features at a 20 percent lower price. Unlike the VT420, the new WY-285 provides backward compatibility with DEC's VT320, VT220, VT100 and VT52, as well as Wyse's WY-85 terminals.
Wyse also introduced the WY-285ES, which is the fifth member of the company's low emissions ES terminal family. The WY-285ES provides all the features of the WY-285 while adhering to the MPR 1990:10 Swedish electromagnetic emission guidelines, the most stringent standards in the world.
"The WY-285 demonstrates to users in the ANSI/DEC marketplace that Wyse is committed to providing a high quality, compatible product family that is safe, reliable and cost-effective," said Art Lipton, senior vice president of terminals and display products at Wyse Technology.
The WY-285, WY-185 and recently announced WY-325 represent Wyse's continuing effort to provide affordable terminals with advanced features to the ANSI/DEC marketplace. The WY-185 provides an inexpensive alternative to the VT320, and the WY-325 is an affordable, VT220-compatible, plug and play terminal for converting monochrome applications into color.
Targeted at the DEC marketplace, which includes Fortune 1000 companies and government agencies, the WY-285 is fully compatible with, and provides all the functionality of, the DEC VT420, including 10x16 character resolution with a selectable overscan. In addition, the WY-285 offers a number of features not found in the VT420, including 15x12 resolution for backward compatibility to VT320 soft fonts. The function keys are fully programmable from the host or the terminal, and can be saved in Wyse's non-volatile RAM; with the VT420, the keys must be reprogrammed after each power-up.
Wyse offers comprehensive ergonomic features on the WY-285, including a selectable 85 Hz refresh rate for flicker-free viewing. The WY-285 also has a detachable keyboard with mechanical key switches which provide a crisp touch. The attractively designed casing has a convenient trap door, allowing easy field upgrades. The 14-inch, non- glare, monochrome display is mounted on a tilt and swivel base.
Both models are available immediately in North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. The U.S. list for the WY-285 is $449, and the WY-285ES is priced at $539. The company also announced it has reduced the U.S. list price of the WY-185 from $499 to $450 and the WY-185ES from $539 to $490. Readers can reach Wyse Technology at 800-GET-WYSE.
