WYSE ADDS FOUR NEW PERSONAL COMPUTERS TO LINE; SCALABLE SYSTEMS AVAILABLE IN CUSTOM CONFIGURATIONS

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Expanding its award-winning scalable systems family, Wyse Technology Inc. announced today four new processor configurations of the Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA)-based Decision 486se desktop personal computer. Processor models that join the 33MHz i486DX system introduced last fall are 25MHz i486SX, 33MHz i486SX, 50MHz i486DX2 and 66MHz i486DX2. The platform features investment protection through highly scalable components, including a Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) socket-upgradeable processor. The Decision 486se will offered in standard and customized configurations.
The Decision 486se joins the award-winning Industry Standard Architecture (ISA)-based Decision 486si which was named the Top Best Buy by PC World magazine in a January review of the World's Best $2500 Windows PCs. The new Decision 486se includes the same winning features such as a local bus video system and a user-upgradeable CPU.
The powerful Decision 486se is targeted for performance-sensitive applications such as computer-aided design, multimedia, scientific analysis and desktop publishing. The 32-bit EISA bus allows data to be moved more quickly between the CPU and I/O cards than a 16-bit Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus, making it ideal as a compact file server. The local bus video subsystem, called Hyper16 Video, provides peak graphics performance for high-end graphics applications as well.
"Because our value-added reseller (VAR) customers require configuration flexibility for their particular applications, we're offering a solid, high-performance base system with scalable features," explained Rich Wesson, vice president of business development for Wyse's Systems Division. "At no extra cost to the customer, Wyse will provide the service of configuring and testing the system at our U.S. configuration center."
Custom configurations save money by providing only the features needed. Resellers do not have to compromise on features by accepting less and integrating extra components, or accepting more features than required. Wyse's integration of components also saves setup time. Scalable options include type and speed of CPU, size of memory and cache, size and type of hard disk drives, tape drives and multiport boards.
The system features simple processor upgrades through the use of a ZIF socket. Users can easily remove, replace and secure the CPU with the flick of a lever. This low-cost upgrade architecture saves users the expense of purchasing a proprietary motherboard or upgrade board. The Decision 486se can accommodate 16 to 33MHz i486(TM)SX and i486(TM)DX processors, as well as 50MHz i486(TM)DX2, 66MHz i486(TM)DX2 and Intel OverDrive(TM) upgrade processors.
All models are available now. Standard configurations include 4MB RAM, 256KB cache, choice of the new 2.88MB 3.5-inch or 1.2MB 5.25-inch floppy drive, five half-height storage shelves, seven EISA expansion slots, including two available for local bus devices, Hyper16 Video and DOS 5.0. Additional configurations are available through Wyse's configure-to-order program. List prices start at the following for standard configurations:
 Decision 486se-25SX $1,829
 Decision 486se-33SX $2,029
 Decision 486se-50DX2 $2,779
 Decision 486se-66DX2 $2,979
In addition, systems configured for Microsoft's Windows for Workgroups will be available later this month.
