 WXYZ-TV (CH. 7) TO REBROADCAST AWARD-WINNING 'LEARN TO READ' SERIES
 SOUTHFIELD, Mich., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of WXYZ-TV Ch. 7's ongoing Assignment: Education campaign, "Learn To Read" will be rebroadcast starting Monday, July 6, weekdays from 5-5:30 a.m. "Learn To Read" consists of 30 half-hour programs designed to teach the basics of reading through phonetic methods.
 The curriculum for "Learn To Read" is based on the Michigan Method, a phonetic system of reading instruction which combines the best elements of the widely used Laubach and LVA (Literacy Volunteers of America) systems. Scripts for the lesson portion of "Learn To Read" were written by Susan Meyer, director of Godfrey-Lee Community Education in Wyoming, Mich. Meyer, a former adult literacy teacher, has 15 years' background in adult and community education.
 Produced by WXYZ-TV/Channel 7, the "Learn To Read" series has been honored with several awards, including the Charles P. Scripps Literacy Award. "Learn To Read" was originally broadcast on WXYZ-TV and WTVS-TV in 1986 and has been syndicated nationally to both commercial and public television stations.
 "Learn To Read" is a part of WXYZ-TV/Channel 7's Assignment: Education public service campaign. Assignment: Education is an ongoing campaign designed to increase public awareness of the importance of education and is sponsored by Chrysler Corporation, SelectCare and Michigan Bell.
 In addition to WXYZ-TV, Scripps Howard Broadcasting owns and operates television stations in Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Kansas City, Memphis, Phoenix, Tampa, Tulsa and West Palm Beach. It also operates radio stations in Baltimore, Memphis, Portland, Ore., and cable television systems in California, Colorado and Florida with 267,400 basic subscribers.
