WXYZ-TV/CHANNEL 7, KMART AND FIRST ALERT ANNOUNCE SUCCESS OF FIRE SAFETY CAMPAIGN

DETROIT, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- WXYZ-TV/Channel 7, Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) and First Alert have distributed over 119,000 smoke detectors in the Detroit metropolitan area as part of their fire safety campaign. The campaign provided metro Detroiters an opportunity to purchase smoke detectors at the reduced price of $5 at local Kmart stores from Dec. 17-31, 1992.
The fire safety campaign was launched following a dramatic increase of fatal fires in the metro area. According to Detroit Fire Chief Rodney W. Parnell, the campaign is already saving lives. Shortly after a donated smoke detector was installed by Detroit Fire Department personnel in the home of Detroit resident Delores Holden, a fire broke out in her home. Because of the smoke detector, fire officials say Holden was able to get out of the burning building in time to avoid injury or even death.
WXYZ-TV/Channel 7, businesswoman Marian Ilitch, smoke detector manufacturer First Alert and WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 anchor Bill Bonds each purchased and donated 1,000 smoke detectors to the Detroit Fire Department and surrounding communities. Other local communities receiving donated smoke detectors through the fire safety campaign include Ferndale, Roseville, Redford Township, Pontiac, Livonia, Inkster, Highland Park, Hamtramck and Lyon Township. In many instances, fire department personnel installed the donated units in the homes of the recipients to ensure proper installation.
In addition to WXYZ-TV, Scripps Howard Broadcasting owns and operates television stations in Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Kansas City, Memphis, Phoenix, Tampa, Tulsa and West Palm Beach. It also operates radio stations in Baltimore, Memphis, Portland, Ore., and cable television systems in California, Colorado, and Florida with 267,400 basic subscribers.
