WWJ NEWSRADIO ANNOUNCES 3-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH DETROIT LIONS
DETROIT, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- WWJ Newsradio 95 today announced a three-year contract extension with the NFC Central Division Champion Detroit Lions. The contract extension gives WWJ exclusive play-by-play broadcast rights to Detroit Lions broadcasts, and allows WWJ to network Detroit Lions football throughout the Midwest. WWJ Newsradio 95 has been the Lions' flagship station since the 1989 season.
"In the past three years, the Detroit Lions have rebuilt their organization, their team, and their winning tradition. At WWJ, we have done the same" stated Rod Zimmerman, CBS vice president and WWJ general manager. Zimmerman also said, "All of us at CBS Radio are excited to be the radio home of the Detroit Lions, and to be associated with a first- class franchise."
Mark Champion, the play-by-play voice of the Detroit Lions and WWJ Newsradio 95 morning sports anchor, along with veteran local sportscaster Jim Brandstatter on color, will continue as the official Detroit Lions broadcast team.
Chuck Schmidt, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Detroit Lions, stated, "We are delighted to continue what has been an excellent relationship with WWJ Newsradio 95. It has been a pleasure to work with each person within the WWJ organization, and we look forward to the next three years with WWJ as the radio voice of the Detroit Lions."
WWJ Newsradio 95, a CBS-owned radio station, is Detroit's pre-eminent sports outlet, with more play-by-play coverage than any other radio station. In addition to Detroit Lions football, WWJ is the flagship station of the Detroit Pistons, and originates University of Michigan football and basketball. WWJ also carries major league baseball, the playoffs and World Series, NFL Monday Night Football, the Super Bowl, the NCAA men's basketball tournament, and the Detroit Free Press/Mazda International Marathon.
