WWDB-FM TO LAUNCH NEW CELEBRITY READ-ALOUD PROGRAM; NEW JERSEY
GOV. JIM FLORIO AND HIS WIFE KICK OFF EVENT 1:30 P.M. TODAY
Today, Gov. Jim Florio and his wife Lucinda, along with WWDB-FM host Paul W. Smith, will kick off the first in a series of celebrity read- aloud programs for kids at 1:30 p.m. at the Joseph D. Sharp Elementary School in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Florio will be reading to a group of third grade students and their parents in an effort to stimulate the children's interest in reading at an age where it can really make a difference.
WWDB-FM Program Director David J. Rimmer said the idea for the read- aloud sessions originated because of the station's involvement with the first lady's radio series called "Mrs. Bush's Storytime," which aired in the Philadelphia market on WWDB-FM.
"We're excited that we can not only help promote 'Mrs. Bush's Storytime,' but we can also play a role in the promotion of literacy in general," said Rimmer.
"At each event, we're also planning to give out special literacy tips for parents and their children, and trying to target a wide variety of schools, local libraries and even museums to make sure we reach the widest audience possible."
The next read aloud program will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13, and will feature "Evening Magazine" co-host Ray Murray. Other celebrieites planning to read to kids in the future include: Delaware Gov. Mike Castle, Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham, WCAU-TV anchor Larry Kane, Cherry Hill Mayor Susan Bass Levin, television legend Sally Starr, Police Commissioner Willie Williams, and WTXF anchor Lee McCarthy, among others.
Coverage for the kick-off event and others is invited.
