WV SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE RAVENSWOOD, RICH
CHARLESTON, W.Va., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Jim Bowen, director of District 23 of the United Steelworkers of America (USW) said today that, "I am delighted that the State Senate Judiciary Committee will hold hearings on the Ravenswood Aluminum Corporation and its connections to the fugitive Marc Rich.
"The RAC story is an incredible tragedy," Bowen said, "one that has devastated a peaceful West Virginia community. I commend the committee for their interest in discovering the truth about RAC and Marc Rich."
State Sen. Jim Humphreys, chairman of the West Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee, announced today on the floor of the senate that the committee will hold hearings on RAC and the controlling interest held in the company by Rich, a fugitive from U.S. justice, the union said.
The hearings will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 3:00 p.m. in room 208 West of the Capitol Building. The union said RAC has locked out over 1,700 members of the Steelworkers since Nov. 1, 1990. The company has hired over 1,000 "permanent replacement workers" to operate the plant, the union said.
"The Steelworkers look forward to this opportunity to tell the truth about RAC and who's behind its attempt to destroy the lives and livelihoods of these West Virginia working people," Bowen said.
"We'll present the facts as we know them to be," Bowen said. "And we'll ask the legislature to enact laws that will not only help the locked-out Steelworkers and their families, but will ensure that no West Virginia working families will ever be subjected to this kind of treatment again."
Along with Bowen, those invited to testify at the hearing are: Joe Lang, a city council member of Zug, Switzerland; Joe Uehlein, a representative of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations; Dan Stidham, president of USW Local 5668; Charlie McDowell, Local 5668 grievance chair; Dewey Taylor, a Local 5668 member; and Marge Flanagan, the wife of a locked-out Steelworker.
Also invited were Rich; Charles Bradley, an owner of RAC; Willy Strothotte, also an owner of RAC; In Suk Oh, a member of RAC's board of directors; and R. Emmett Boyle, RAC CEO and also a part owner of the company. It is uncertain whether any of these company representatives will appear, the union said.
