WTC INDUSTRIES, INC. REPORTS THIRD QUARTER RESULTS

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- WTC Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ: WTCO) today announced third quarter sales for the period ended Sept. 30, 1993 of $250,506 compared with $661,468 in the same period last year. Sales for nine months were $1,218,057 compared with $1,238,720 for the same period a year ago. The reported net loss for the third quarter was $186,069, or $0.12 per share, compared with a net loss of $164,781, or $0.11 per share in the same period last year. The net loss for the first nine months was $1,378,175 or $0.84 per share, compared with $750,027, or $0.49 per share for the same 1992 period.
The decline in sales for the quarter was principally a reflection of the prior year's large initial stocking of a new distributor, and lower sales in historically significant, but cyclical market segments.
"We've made significant progress toward long-term stabilization of the business while conserving working capital in the short term," said Matthew E. Gilfix, chief executive officer. "Despite the sharp reductions in operating expenses initiated during the second quarter, technical resources have been augmented and tightly focused on current quality and reliability, as well as bringing superior new products to market.
"WTC is taking the necessary steps to position itself as a viable competitor in the water purification market," Gilfix said. The company announced it has enhanced its licensing agreement with the Kansas State University Research Foundation through the addition of three new patent applications, which are expected to result in new product line and even new market opportunities for WTC.
This outlook for the future, combined with the success of the resource conservation efforts, have led to several expressions of interest in the company's capital formation effort. Additional capital is required to fund continuing operations and enable WTC to deliver the potential value of its technology to shareholders.
WTC Industries, Inc., based in Minneapolis, had sales of $1.5 million in 1992 and holds the exclusive rights to manufacture and market the patented PentaPure(R) iodinated resin worldwide. The company provides water purification devices for consumer, industrial, OEM and emergency applications.
