NAA/NSC member WSNet announced that it now offers its network of
multiple dwelling unit (MDU) service providers digital video via
Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), one of the most cost-effective
methods of providing 200 channels of digital satellite television to
apartment complexes, condominiums, townhomes, retirement communities,
nursing homes, marinas, RV parks, university dormitories and new housing
developments. QAM allows MDU service providers to use a building's
existing cable wiring, saving hundreds of dollars in installation
expenses. QAM also eliminates the requirement of having a satellite
antenna or "dish" on each MDU building. QAM uses satellite
signals that have been converted from QPSK/L-Band satellite signals; a
digital modulation standard used by the cable television industry. This
cost-effective conversion, which occurs at the headend, allows the
delivery of WSNet's digital programming using 18 transponders and
only 108 MHz of bandwidth. This method of QAM distribution is compatible
with 330, 450, 550 and 750 MHz CATV systems. WSNet's digital
satellite television service distributes basic and specialty programming
to the private cable and wireless cable industries. WSNet's
comprehensive digital television service offers nearly 200 channels,
including more than 80 basic video channels, 41 premium multiplex
services, 37 channels of digital music, as well as pay-per-view and
international programming.
