WSI Group to oversee construction of Iraqi airport.
The construction of Imam Ali Airport in Najaf, Iraq is to be overseen by the World Strategic Initiatives Group, a security company led by a former US State Department official.
Henry E. Wilkins, head of the company, reportedly worked for the State Department advising the governments of Afghanistan and Bosnia on police issues. Iraqi construction firm Sahel al-Jazera Group (SAG) will also be working on the project.
According to The Associated Press, Najaf provincial governor Asad Abu-Kalal entered into a 10-year agreement with WSI Group and SAG on Monday (26 June) that is expected to cost more than USD300m.
The existing airport is to be expanded and modernised and plans have been included for the widening and lengthening of the airport runway and the construction of a passenger terminal that can handle 15 aircraft at once.
