WRONGFUL DISCHARGE SUIT FILED AGAINST AMTRAK ON BEHALF OF FORMER EMPLOYEE UNDERGOING MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR A SEX CHANGE

PHILADELPHIA, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- A wrongful discharge suit was filed Tuesday, June 15, by the Philadelphia law firm of Lovitz & Gold, P.C., on behalf of Andria Adams Dobre, former "Secretary I" for Amtrak's Philadelphia office.
Sidney L. Gold, Dobre's attorney, alleges that she was forced to resign her position on March 28, 1990, because of harassment and deliberate and malicious criticism occurring after Dobre informed her supervisors that she was about to undergo medical treatment for a sex change.
"Prior to that time," Gold explained, "Dobre was often complimented on the quality of her work, receiving many positive evaluations regarding her job performance. In August of 1989, she informed Amtrak's senior director of Data Operations, David Hardrick, and Valerie Sturgis, her direct supervisor, that she was receiving hormone treatments to begin the procedure for changing her gender from male to female. From that point until she resigned, she was subjected to various kinds of gender-based discriminatory conduct. These caused her to resign, and to file a charge of gender discrimination with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.
"But the Commission failed," Gold continued, "to gain voluntary compliance from Amtrak with the requirements of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, through conciliation, conference and persuasion."
Dobre is seeking reinstatement of her former position, along with compensatory and punitive damages.
