WPP'S ISELIN MILL TO CLOSE; PRODUCTION MOVED TO ALABAMA, SOUTH CAROLINA

WEST POINT, Ga., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- WestPoint Pepperell (NYSE: WPM) announced plans today to close the Iselin Mill located in New Braunfels, Texas.
An orderly phaseout of jobs will begin in May and should be completed by mid-fall. "This difficult decision was made only after lengthy and careful consideration of any viable alternatives," a company spokesperson said.
"The company's other sheeting greige mills, which are located closer to the finishing plants, are undergoing an extensive modernization this year, and Iselin production will be absorbed by these other greige mills," the spokesperson continued. WestPoint Pepperell will attempt during coming weeks to find a buyer who will operate the plant as an ongoing concern.
The Iselin facility, constructed in 1967, was purchased by WestPoint Pepperell in 1972 and operated as a woven apparel fabrics unit until it became a part of bed products manufacturing in 1984. The facility has approximately 350 employees.
WestPoint Pepperell is the nation's leading domestic producer in the bed linen market and is one of the top two domestic producers in the bath towel market. Products are marketed under such leading trademarks as MARTEX, UTICA, LADY PEPPERELL, STEVENS and VELLUX, and licensed trademarks such as COLLIER CAMPBELL, LOUIS NICHOLE, EILEEN WEST, RALPH LAUREN, GLORIA VANDERBILT and LIBERTY OF LONDON. The Apparel Fabrics segment of the company produces single and double-knit fabrics sold under the ALAMAC trademark.
