WORLDWIDE SALES OF TIMESHARE PROPERTY SOAR TO $4 BILLION
WASHINGTON, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- In a study released today regarding worldwide resort development, the American Resort Development Association (ARDA) revealed that there are currently 3,050 timeshare resorts located in 75 countries representing over 2 million owners around the world. The study, "The 1992 Worldwide Resort Timeshare Industry," conducted by Ragatz Associates, represents the most extensive report describing this growing industry on a worldwide basis.
During the past decade, sales of timeshare weeks have increased dramatically. Over 440,000 timeshare weeks were sold in 1991, about 340 percent more than in 1980. The gross sales volume in 1991 was about 3.7 billion, over 650 percent more than in 1980 ($490 million). Roughly, 3.3 million timeshare intervals were purchased in the 1980s for a sales volume of over $23 million.
The United States is the leader in the worldwide timeshare market, containing 43.6 percent (1,329) of the resorts and one-half of all the timeshare units (60,380) in the world. Also, 59.7 percent (1,411,000) of all timeshare owners in the world reside in the United States.
However, Europe and Mexico are quickly becoming dominant areas for timeshare growth, development and ownership, containing 34 percent of the resorts. Also, more than 28 percent of all timeshare owners worldwide reside in either Europe or Mexico.
"Timesharing will continue to grow and attract new owners around the world as the industry matures," said Tom Franks, president of ARDA. "Today, some of the most respected names in the hospitality industry, including Marriott and Hilton, are developing timeshare properties. With their support, coupled with veteran resorts around the world, we expect timesharing to become a highly sought after vacation option in the years to come."
While 59.7 percent of all timeshare owners in the world reside in the United States, this proportion is decreasing as the market takes a firmer hold in other countries around the world. The United Kingdom has 242,000 owners, or 10.3 percent of the total. Mexico has 124,000 owners, and South Africa has 120,000 owners.
The American Resort Development Association is the professional association of the recreational real estate, resort and vacation ownership industry. ARDA represents over 1,200 resorts, including second-home resorts, community developments, vacation timeshare resorts, fractional interests and recreational vehicle (RV) camp resorts.
