WORLDSPAN SIGNS $100 MILLION AGREEMENT WITH IBM

ATLANTA, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- WORLDSPAN has signed a multi-year, $100 million agreement with IBM under which IBM will help develop strategic information systems for WORLDSPAN's computer reservations system.
The package includes IBM ES/9000 mainframes, storage devices, related software, services and ESCON fiber optic technology. IBM will assist WORLDSPAN in the integration of all software and host systems.
"We're pleased to continue our partnership with IBM to help develop strategic information systems," said Cal Rader, WORLDSPAN's chief executive officer. "The agreement announced today allows us to improve the world-class information systems services we provide for both the domestic and international travel industry."
"This agreement provides WORLDSPAN with the processing power needed to run the consolidated PARS, DATAS II and ABACUS CRS environment, together with the Northwest Airlines and TWA passenger reservations systems," added George Balog, WORLDSPAN's senior vice president- operations and technology. "This system configuration provides fast, secure access to huge amounts of data, ensures data integrity while processing millions of transactions, and supports thousands of people in the 11,600 travel agencies in WORLDSPAN's worldwide operations."
All information systems are being consolidated into the recently completed data center in Atlanta, integrating the mainframes with the current IBM workstations that are installed at subscribing travel agency locations. Currently, IBM's mid-range and personal systems, coupled with WORLDSPAN software, help each travel agency run its general business functions more efficiently. The integration of these complex systems will continue to provide each travel agent with quick, secure access to the products of more than 500 travel service providers throughout the world.
According to Harris Warsaw, IBM's Georgia trading area manager, IBM has worked closely with WORLDSPAN in an alliance to develop strategic information technology platforms that will help position WORLDSPAN to better serve all of its customers. "This new agreement will ensure that the platform for WORLDSPAN's new data center provides the data processing power necessary to support the company's varied product line, now and well into the future," Warsaw said.
WORLDSPAN offers a broad selection of reservations, ticketing and office automation products to the domestic and international travel industry. The company is jointly owned by affiliates of Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, Trans World Airlines, and by Abacus Distribution Systems Pte Ltd, the Asia/Pacific computer reservations system company based in Singapore. WORLDSPAN's world headquarters are located in Atlanta.
