WORLD TODAY:- Fuel hike a pounds 1bn bonus.

RISING fuel costs have provided the Government with a windfall of as much as pounds 1bn from a scheme designed to promote renewable energy, it was reported today.

The revelation comes as Gordon Brown comes under pressure from Labour backbenchers to impose a windfall tax on energy companies' "excessive" profits. Now there are calls for cash received by the Treasury from the Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation scheme to be used to help families. The NFFO, set up in the 1980s, offered plants a guaranteed price for their electricity. It ran at a loss for years but now has a surplus as a result of soaring prices.
