WORLD EXPERTS CONFER ON CHLORINE'S FUTURE

WORLD EXPERTS CONFER ON CHLORINE'S FUTURE
 WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Chlorine's future in an

environmentally sensitive world will be examined by the world's leading authorities during the 1992 World Chlorine Symposium, Oct. 14-15, in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
Water disinfection using chlorine has saved millions of lives. And chlorine is used in half of the commercial chemistry that provides today's standard of living, in thousands of products ranging from disposable diapers to vinyl house siding. But now some are asking whether all this chlorine may be harming the environment. The symposium -- "Chlorine in Perspective" -- will attempt to provide answers.
Issues to be covered include management and recycling of chlorine-containing wastes, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in the environment, a hard look at the evidence on dioxins, and technological solutions to environmental challenges.
Other thought-provoking sessions will look at chlorine's essential role in society, the future of the Russian chlorine industry, and world chlorine industry progress on implementing the Responsible Care program. And a noted broadcast journalist will look at chlorine from an "outsider's" perspective, and will lead a debate on perceptions of the chlorine industry and issues it faces.
Speakers will include senior level industrialists, legislators and top academicians. Among them will be:
-- Dr. Erich W. Bretthauer, assistant administrator for research and development at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, who will discuss dioxin.
-- Andrew J. Butler, senior vice president of Dow Chemical U.S.A. and president of Dow Europe, who will look at Responsible Care from a global perspective.
-- Anatoli Salin, director general of the Chemical and Petrochemical Industry Department for the Russian Ministry of Industry.
A corresponding Trade Forum on Oct. 13 will cover PVC demand in Eastern Europe, global alkalinity trade flows, alkalinity in aluminum production, soda ash, and future supply and demand of chlorine and caustic soda.
"Chlorine In Perspective" is being sponsored by Euro Chlor, which is a trade association representing the European chlorine industry. The Washington-based Chlorine Institute is a cooperating sponsor. This year's event is the third global chlorine symposium; the first was in Tokyo in 1988 and the second in Washington two years ago.
