WORLD'S FIRST FLUORESCENT BILLBOARD -- CREATED FOR CASTLE ROCK'S 'NEEDFUL THINGS' -- TO BE UNVEILED JULY 1

LOS ANGELES, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The world's first fluorescent billboard -- prepared for "Needful Things," a Castle Rock Entertainment release through Columbia Pictures starring Ed Harris, Max von Sydow, Bonnie Bedelia, J.T. Walsh and Amanda Plummer -- will be demonstrated and unveiled this Thursday, July 1, at 8:30 p.m. at Patrick Media, 1550 West Washington Blvd. in advance of it being positioned July 6 for advance promotion of the film at the intersection of Santa Monica and Westwood boulevards in West Los Angeles.
The billboard's fluorescent effect was created by Wildfire Inc., the lighting technology company that specializes in super visual lighting techniques utilizing fluorescent materials, coupled with its powerful Wildfire long-throw ultraviolet lighting fixtures.
The "Needful Things" board is further innovative in that it mainly uses earth tones (not the bright day-glo commonly associated with fluorescence). The overall effect is three-dimensional and creates one look during the day and another look at night. In keeping with the film's campaign the fluorescent board depicts a shopping bag with a moving and emerging face and hands of a victim who has fallen prey to a needful thing.
"Needful Things," opens in theaters nationwide on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1993. The film is based on master storyteller Stephen King's best selling novel of the same name.
"Needful Things" is the story of a beautiful New England village which unravels in a rash of violence when a seemingly benign stranger opens a curious antique shop, the contents of which have the power to unleash the evil that lies just beneath the friendly veneer of the peaceful townsfolk. Harris -- who co-stars with Tom Cruise in the upcoming "The Firm" -- portrays Sheriff Alan Pangborn, a man faced with the task of keeping his community from self-destructing. von Sydow portray Leland Gaunt, a mysterious, charming stranger whom Pangborn suspects is the cause of the unrest. Bedelia portrays Polly, Pangborn's girlfriend, and Plummer portrays Nettie, her co-worker and friend.
"Needful Things" is the theatrical directorial debut of Fraser C. Heston (writer/producer/director of TNT's "Treasure Island" and "Crucifer of Blood;" writer of Columbia's "Mountain Men" starring father Charlton Heston, and writer/producer of the feature "Mother Lode," also starring the elder Heston). Executive produced by Peter Yates ("Bullitt," "The Deep"), the film is produced by Jack Cummins ("The Mighty Quinn") and written by W.D. Richter ("Brubaker," "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"), who adapted his screenplay from Stephen King's novel. Patrick Doyle ("Indochine," "Much Ado About Nothing") composed the original score.
