 WORLD'S FAVORITE SPORTS CAR REACHES PRODUCTION MILESTONE;
 MAZDA MIATA REACHES QUARTER-MILLION MARK
 IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- After only three years of production, the best-selling sports car in the world celebrates a production milestone today when the 250,000th Mazda MX-5 Miata rolls off the assembly line. The Classic Red sports car was built at Mazda's Hiroshima, Japan, assembly plant and is destined for sale in Australia.
 When the Miata was introduced in mid-1989 as a 1990 model, it was heralded as the return of the affordable sports car. Automotive publications and other media quickly showered the engaging roadster with awards and accolades. Automobile magazine called the Miata its first-ever "Automobile of the Year." Public demand, which became known as "Miata Mania," quickly outstripped the supply, resulting in long waiting lists at Mazda dealerships.
 The Miata traces its design history to Mazda's research and development center in Irvine and was conceived to bring back the appeal and charm of the classic roadsters of the past but with the safety, reliability and durability that buyers have come to expect in the 1990s.
 Since the Miata went on sale, more than 112,000 have been sold in the United States. This makes the Miata the best-selling sports car in America. In addition, the Miata is the best-selling convertible in the world. Combined with Mazda's legendary RX-7 sports car, Mazda claims the title of the world's largest manufacturer of sports cars.
 Clark Vitulli, chief operating officer for Mazda Motor of America, summed up the Miata's ongoing popularity, saying, "The Miata was designed to have universal appeal, rather than a specific target market. The result is a car that is loved and driven by owners from 16 to 96. No other car in recent memory has created such a strong attachment between owners and their cars. In fact, we've found that Miata owners are more likely to own vanity plates, and they tend to wash their cars more frequently."
 At its introduction, the Miata was available in red, white and blue. Since then, Mazda has sold silver, bright yellow and black Miatas. A limited run of 4,000 Miatas in classic British Racing Green with a tan leather interior sold out in just three months. For 1993, Mazda has made the tan leather interior available on black, red and white Miatas.
 The Miata is now sold on nearly every continent on Earth, with the exception of Antarctica. Countries where the Miata is sold include Australia, Canada, Colombia, Great Britain, Germany and Japan.
 Perhaps the most telling comment on the popularity of the Miata has come from Mazda's competitors. Since the Miata was introduced, virtually every competing manufacturer has introduced a two-seat roadster show car or concept vehicle along the lines of the Miata.
 Mazda Motor of America is headquartered in Irvine and is responsible for the sales, distribution and marketing of Mazda vehicles in the United States. The company has five regional offices, 10 port facilities and training and parts distribution centers throughout the nation.
