WORKSHOP OPENS FOR PRODUCTION OF HISTORIC MILE-LONG RAINBOW FLAG ON WORLD AIDS DAY, DEC. 1

FUND-RAISER EXPECTED TO RAISE OVER $500,000 FOR AIDS
 PITTSBURGH, Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Potentially the largest-ever

"grassroots" fund-raiser for AIDS in recent history launches on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, 1993. The Stadtlanders Foundation announced that the workshop which will house the creation of the world's largest, one-mile-long rainbow flag to raise more than $500,000 for AIDS service organizations nationwide will open this Wednesday. The dramatic multi-colored rainbow flag is a symbol for the modern-day gay and lesbian freedom movement, and represents a community which has been strongly impacted by the AIDS epidemic.
An expected 10,000 individuals from across the country will donate $50 or more to carry the mile-long by 30-foot-wide rainbow flag during its one and only appearance in the Stonewall 25 International March on the United Nations to Affirm the Human Rights of Gay and Lesbian People on June 26, 1994, in New York City.
Cleve Jones, one of the world's leading gay rights and AIDS activists and founder of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, is spearheading the "Raise The Rainbow" effort. Jones is leading this first major project of The Stadtlanders Foundation as the chair of its AIDS Community Advisory Board. "This is a powerful visual that will focus much-needed attention to the AIDS epidemic," said Jones. "But it's also a unique grassroots fund-raising campaign where every individual who participates will make a difference in the lives of many."
Supporters of gay and lesbian rights are mobilizing across the nation to take part in this historic event. Production on the dramatic multi-colored flag will take place in New York City at the project's Chelsea area workshop. This week, more than 17,000 square yards of fabric in the vibrant purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red hues of the rainbow will be delivered to the workshop to produce this one-of-a-kind flag.
The Stadtlanders Foundation has commissioned Gilbert Baker to design and produce the mile-long rainbow flag, equal to more than three times the size of the Empire State Building and the length of 20 blocks in Manhattan. Baker is the creator of the original rainbow flag, which was flown for the first time over the 1978 San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day celebration, and subsequently adopted as the universal symbol of lesbian and gay pride across the country.
Those who wish to support "Raise The Rainbow" and carry the flag in the Stonewall 25 March are asked to register with a tax deductible contribution of $50 or more to The Stadtlanders Foundation. The first 10,000 people to register for the event will receive a commemorative strip of the one-of-a-kind flag following its historic appearance at the June 26 event.
Corporate sponsor Stadtlanders Pharmacy, a nationwide pharmacy specializing in serving the needs of individuals living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic conditions, is underwriting all costs for creation of the rainbow flag so that every dollar contributed by marchers will go directly to the foundation. All funds generated by "Raise The Rainbow" will be distributed to AIDS charities nationwide under the guidance of The Stadtlanders Foundation's 16-member National Community AIDS Advisory Board.
To register for "Raise The Rainbow" and have the opportunity to receive a piece of the great flag as an historic souvenir, individuals should print or type their name, address and phone number and send it with their tax deductible contribution of $50 or more to The Stadtlanders Foundation, 600 Penn Center Blvd., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15235. Stadtlanders Pharmacy provides overnight medication delivery, insurance billing and patient counseling on a nationwide basis. Underwriting "Raise The Rainbow" is the latest in a series of programs sponsored by Stadtlanders Pharmacy in an effort to give back to the communities affected by HIV/AIDS.
The Stadtlanders Foundation was established in 1993 to offer direct support on a national level to those charitable endeavors which improve the quality of life for patients living with chronic conditions.
