WORK STOPPAGE AT PPG'S FRESNO PLANT

PITTSBURGH, May 23 /PRNewswire/ -- PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) reported today that employees represented by Local 474 of the Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers International Union (ABG) initiated a strike at PPG's Fresno, Calif., flat glass plant at 11:59 p.m. (PDT) yesterday after labor contract negotiations reached impasse and PPG implemented provisions of its final contract offer.
Issues include healthcare benefits, wages and pensions. The plant has about 200 employees.
A three-year agreement expired May 16, but was extended to 11:59 p.m. (PDT) yesterday to allow time for a vote by ABG members on the company's final contract offer. The offer was rejected in balloting Thursday that had been originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
"We regret negotiations reached impasse and the union's decision to strike," said Joseph Cafaro, vice president, flat glass. "Assuring competitiveness for the Fresno plant is critical to the future of the facility and our West Coast glass business in a very difficult business environment, and that requires reasonable collective bargaining provisions as well as production efficiency.
"Our negotiators remain in contact with the union and are available to meet at its request. The ABG members have been notified that work is available under provisions of our final contract offer," Cafaro added. "Various options are available to assure continued service to customers normally served by the Fresno plant."
