WOMEN'S MEDICAL CENTER GIVES RUSSIAN WOMEN NEW CHOICES
 EXPERTS EXPLAIN U.S.-REPRODUCTIVE CARE PRACTICES
FOREST HILLS, N.Y., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Choices Women's Medical Center, Inc. is leading an innovative educational exchange for Russian physicians and feminist women's groups on the latest U.S. treatment models and philosophy in women's reproductive care.
The week-long session will be held from Oct. 12-16, 1992 at the Vishnevsky Clinic in Moscow. Vishnevsky, with its physician staff, is widely-recognized in Russia as one of the country's leadering gynecological institutions.
"Our goal is to broaden Russian women's reproductive choices by helping Russian physicians broaden their expertise and perspective," says Ms. Merle Hoffman, Choices founder and president. "We will serve as an enabler for both the women and their doctors. We will address a serious need for accurate information and accessible healthcare."
The educational exchange is being hosted by the Vishnevsky Clinic, and the Russian publishing houses of "Culture and Traditions" and "Charm" which was founded by the Literary Fund of Russia.
 New Perspective Needed
Program hosts and Choices joined forces based on a common recognition of limitations in current Russian birth control and abortion practices.
While statistics vary, it is generally agreed that high abortion rates -- from 9-18 million per year -- were normative in the former Soviet Union. Modern contraceptive methods are not universally understood or accessible. And, negative attitudes based on fear or lack of knowledge are all too common.
"Our experience with Russian women at Choices exposed me to this problem several years ago," says Ms. Hoffman. "As a result, I created a plan to address the need. Our educational exchange is first step towards resolution."
 The Focus: Art and Science
Choices meetings with Russian physicians will include presentations, clinics and demonstrations. Discussions will address the full range of reproductive health: The philosophy of reproductive care, patient counseling, contraceptive options and abortion procedures.
"We will emphasize the duality required for excellent care, both the art and science of women's health care. The science is innate in optimum procedures, the art focuses on proper counseling, support and empowerment," says Ms. Hoffman.
"We believe that with knowledge and information Russian women can make their own educated and personalized decisions about medical care, whether in the area of general health, surgery or birth control."
 Choices
Choices Women's Medical Center, Inc. was founded by Mr. Hoffman in 1971. The freestanding center addresses the spectrum of women's reproductive health priorities -- from gynecological services and prenatal and postpartum care to birth control, abortion and sterilization procedures, and rape and incest counselling. Choices currently serves 200 women a day making it one of the largest women's centers in the United States.
