WNBF PH to hold second bodybuilding tourney in October.

by Kristel Satumbaga

The World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) Philippines seeks to popularize the sport by holding its second tournament this year on Oct. 27 at Johnny B. Good in Makati.

WNBF Philippines Vice President Chris Byrne said they are expected at least 50 bodybuilders to compete, which is double than the previous competition held in June at the same venue.

The federation hopes to endorse an "all natural" competition for bodybuilders who abstain from taking performance-enhancing drugs.

"There are so many 'all natural' athletes here in the country but there isn't a platform for them to perform and show their hard work. We're also trying to offer a level playing field for these athletes," said Byrne.

Under Federation and tournament rules, athletes must pass a polygraph test performed by an officially registered examiner as to the athlete's performance enhancing, drug-free status before they are permitted to compete.

All overall winners, as well as random athletes, will also undergo urine testing to ensure there are no banned substances taken during the competition.

In the previous tournament, 13 Filipinos participated out of 21 competitors with local bet Trinity Talloc Dickpus triumphing in the pro bodybuilding category in the professional cards.

The tournament is open to athletes 18 years old and above who have not taken performance enhancers for the last seven years. Categories at stake are bodybuilding, physique, and bikini, as well as the pro cards.

"We are serious and strict about these because the athletes also want that strictness and dedication," said Byrne.

Interested participants may register at wnbfph.com.

The WNBF Philippines also targets three competitions next year in Batangas, Cebu, and Davao.
