Core Issue #1-Workforce Health, Rights & Safety

Workforce Advocacy Legislation/Regulation

WNA is working on the following strategies related to promoting nursing's workplace health, rights and safety.
 Legislation/Rule Activity Target Group

Communication of Obtained clarification from Hospitals
APNP Prescription the Board of Nursing that in
Order to Pharmacist the hospital setting an APNP
by the RN may give a prescription order
 verbally to the RN and the
 RN can transmit this order
 to the pharmacist. This
 clarification was provided
 following a memo that was
 issued by the Division of
 Quality Assurance stating
 that RNs could not do this,
 as it was medical delegation.

Criminalization of A summary of the specific Nursing
RN for medical error statues that WNA would like Workforce
 to see addressed by the
 legislature regarding the
 prevention of a health care
 worker from being charged
 criminally as a result of a
 medical error has been
 distributed. Two of the
 specific statutes are
 included in the current
 budget proposals that are
 under consideration by the
 Legislative Conference
 Committee.

Mandatory Continuing WNA has met with legislators RNs
Education for RNs who are interested in deve-
 loping legislation mandating
 continuing education as a
 requirement for RN's license
 renewal. WNA does not have a
 position on this topic.

Special Interest Group (SIG) Summary of Activity

Staff Nurse SIG Is encouraging nurses to participate
 in WNA's Discussion Forums.
 Educational offerings will be
 provided during the 2007 Annual
 WNA/WSNA Convention.

Advanced Practice Nurse Forum APN Forum has developed their
WI Parish Nurse Coalition strategic plan for 2007-2008. Annual
 Parish Nurse Conference scheduled
 for October 18, 2007 in La Crosse.
 Working with Parish Nurse Coalition
 on developing a strategy for
 responding to the La Crosse Catholic
 Diocese Plan for utilization of
 volunteer Parish Nurses.

Wisconsin Environmental Health Strategic planning meeting scheduled
Nurses Coalition (WEHNC) for August 14 in Madison. Education
 offering scheduled for October 18,
 2007 in La Crosse. Go to WNA's
