WJBK-TV 2 REACHES RETRANSMISSION CONSENT AGREEMENTS WITH LOCAL CABLE SYSTEMS

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- WJBK-TV 2 has negotiated retransmission consent agreements with all major cable systems serving the metropolitan Detroit area.
"We have utilized these negotiations as an opportunity to work with the cable companies because we recognize their importance as partners rather than adversaries in serving our audience," said TV 2 President and General Manager Steve Antoniotti, who estimates that over 60 percent of Detroit-area households subscribe to cable.
The cable law, which takes effect Oct. 6, allows local broadcast stations to seek some form of compensation from cable operators to carry their broadcast signal or demand the operator carry the local signal for no consideration.
WJBK did not ask for cash compensation from the cable companies, but negotiated the following terms:
-- The exclusive right on all cable systems to program local news inserts on the Cable Headline News channel. These five-minute local news windows are scheduled to air at 25 and 55 minutes after each hour.
-- The opportunity to program an additional cable channel at a future date with local programming produced by TV 2.
-- Promotional time on cable channels to promote WJBK and access to direct-mail promotion through cable system mailings to promote the station.
"We believe these opportunities will best serve our viewers and further enhance TV 2's reputation as the most complete local news operation in the Detroit area," said Antoniotti.
WJBK, a CBS affiliate, is not affected by the one-year extension given to cable operators by CBS for the retransmission rights to its locally owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami, Minneapolis and Green Bay, Wis.
