WITH DESIGN IN MIND REPORTS RESULTS FOR QUARTER ENDED MARCH 31; HIRES DIRECTOR OF SALES; CHANGES TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

CHATSWORTH, Calif., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- With Design in Mind International Inc. (NASDAQ: WDIM) today reported its results for the quarter ended March 31, 1993. Net sales were $136,124 for the 1993 quarter, compared with net sales of $352,357 in the comparable quarter in 1992. Revenues generated during the quarter resulted primarily from the liquidation of the company's remaining giftware product line inventories.
The company reported a net loss of $563,747, or $0.18 per share, for the quarter ended March 31, 1993, compared to a net loss of $1,265,402, or $0.34 per share in the comparable quarter in 1992.
For the six-month period ended March 31, 1993, net sales were $614,826, as compared to net sales for the comparable period in 1992 of $2,376,478. The net loss for the 1993 six-month period was $896,224, or $.27 per share, as compared to a net loss of $1,525,486 in the 1992 six-month period, or $.41 per share.
Sheldon F. Morick, president and CEO, commenting on the quarter's results, said that sales and profitability continue to be in line with expectations. Revenues were expected to decrease as the liquidation of the Gift Product line nears completion. As a result of the restructuring program initiated in the previous fiscal year, which included substantial reductions in selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses, the company was able to significantly reduce the loss per share, in spite of the decreases in revenues.
Morick noted that expenses had been reduced in almost every major expense classification, with reductions during the six-month period ended March 31, 1993, of 55 percent in payroll expenses, 72 percent in travel expenses, 58 percent in sales and marketing expenses, 77 percent in office and computer expenses, 51 percent in professional fees and investor relations and 56 percent in financial costs.
As previously reported, the new children's product line -- Great Stuff - Practical Products for Kids(R) -- was introduced at the Chicago Housewares Show in January, and the Toy Fair in New York in February. In response to input from manufacturers representatives and retail buyers during and after these shows, the company made the decision to modify certain elements of the new product and to improve the product packaging. As a result of these enhancements, the production schedule was extended. Based on current production schedules, the first shipment of new product is expected to arrive in the company's distribution facility in late May 1993, with certain of the products not expected to arrive until late July 1993. Shipment of the new product line to customers will begin as soon as the products arrive.
Morick stated that revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 1993, should increase over the quarter ended March 31, 1993, as shipment of the new product line to customers begins. Morick said that at March 31, 1993, the company had $2,624,689 in cash, working capital of $2,733,711 and a current ratio of 7-to-1.
With Design in Mind International Inc. also reported that Nancy Greenberg has recently joined the company in the position of director of sales. Greenberg was most recently western regional sales manager for Stephen Lawrence Co., a national manufacturer of gift wrap and accessories, where she was very successful in increasing sales in her territory. She brings with her more than 15 years diverse sales and sales management experience in the toy and gift business.
Morick stated that he was very pleased that Greenberg had agreed to join the company. He said that he expects Greenberg to assume complete responsibility for all sales activities, including interfacing with the company's sales reps and dealing with major accounts. Greenberg is an aggressive and successful sales professional, and her contribution will be fundamental to the success of the new product line.
With Design in Mind International Inc. also reported that Walter F. Cruttenden III, resigned from the board of directors so that he can concentrate on his duties as chief executive officer of Cruttenden and Co. The company also reported that Howard H. Hoffman, resigned from the board of directors for personal reasons. Morick thanked Cruttenden and Hoffman for their commitment to the company's restructuring during what was a most difficult year.
Joining the board is Dr. Renee White Fraser. Fraser is currently chief executive officer of Fraser & Associates Advertising Inc., a full-service Los Angeles-based advertising agency. Previously, Fraser was executive vice president and general manager of the Los Angeles office of Bozell Advertising Inc. and vice president of Young Rubicam and Dentsu. In addition to her extensive experience in the field of marketing and advertising, Fraser is an accomplished author of numerous books and articles. Fraser holds a doctorate in psychology from the University of Southern California.
Morick commented that he was extremely pleased that Fraser had accepted a position on the board. Morick said that she would add invaluable insight into the company's sales and marketing activities as well as contributing to the company the experience she has gained in starting and operating her own business.
