WITH 100,000 CUSTOMERS PER WEEK, STEW LEONARD'S IS WORLD'S BUSIEST
SUPERMARKET AND A CONNECTICUT TOURIST ATTRACTION
MIDDLETOWN, Conn., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Why is the Connecticut Tourism Association so interested in the comings and goings of Stew Leonard's dairy and grocery store in Norwalk?
"If all the customers who shop at Stew Leonard's during a single week got into their cars at the same time...the line of traffic would stretch more than 200 miles along I-95 from Connecticut to the Maine border," explains CTA president Jane Snaider. "We think people in the tourism industry could learn a great deal from examining a business that attracts more than 100,000 visitors a week."
So, the CTA has invited company president Stew Leonard, Jr. to be the featured speaker at its annual tourism seminar which will be held Thursday, Oct. 8, at New Haven's Park Plaza Hotel, from 9:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The seminar is open to anyone involved with, or interested in, the tourism industry. The cost of the seminar, including lunch, is $45. The luncheon alone, which includes Mr. Leonard's speech, is $25.
Other speakers will include: Evan Smith, director of tourism for the Newport, R.I., Convention and Visitors Bureau; and James Cammisa, Jr., a travel industry analyst and publisher of the Miami-based travel trade newsletter, Travel Industry Indicators.
Since its opening in 1969, Stew Leonard's has attracted more than 50 million visitors. "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" calls it the world's largest dairy store, because it sells more than 10 million quarts of milk per year, 250 tons of butter, and 100 tons of cottage cheese. But the dairy business is only part of the story, because meat, fish, deli, hot foods and produce are equally prominent at Stew Leonard's.
The store's revenues from a single location total nearly $115 million and its annual sales per square foot of selling space -- at $3,470 -- are the highest of any retail store in the world. The Guinness Book of World Records says Stew Leonard's has "the world's fastest moving stock."
The family-owned business has been the subject of countless business studies and articles and is featured in author Tom Peters best seller, "A Passion for Excellence," as one of the best-run companies in America.
As the featured speaker at the CTA seminar, Stew Leonard, Jr. will discuss "Attaining Excellence in Customer Service." He admits that customer service is a passion at Stew Leonard's, and that all employees know that their overriding mission is to keep customers happy and to keep them coming back.
The Connecticut Tourism Association focuses on promoting tourism travel in the state and providing support to local businesses involved in the hospitality business, including restaurateurs, hoteliers, innkeepers, retail merchants and tourist attraction operators.
Further information on the CTA seminar is available by calling Jackie LaBella in Middletown at 203-347-6924 or Elizabeth Harrison in Manchester at 203-646-2223.
