WITCO PROMOTES SODERLIND TO SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT

 NEW YORK, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Witco Corporation (NYSE: WIT) has promoted Carl R. Soderlind to senior vice president-external affairs and has appointed him to the management committee which oversees the $1.7 billion company's day-to-day operations. The committee comprises the four member office of the chairman and Mr. Soderlind.
 Mr. Soderlind, 58 years old, is a 31 year veteran of Witco, who last held the position of group vice president-commercial services, which encompassed the company's investor relations, corporate communications, engineering, purchasing, distribution and traffic departments as well as aspects of the safety, health and environmental affairs responsibilities. Before transferring to Witco headquarters in New York City 13 years ago, Mr. Soderlind had spent his early career at Isocyanate Products Division (IPD). Witco brought IPD in 1969 and in 1976 Mr. Soderlind was named a corporate vice president and general manger.
 "Mr. Soderlind knows Witco inside and out," said Witco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer William R. Toller. "He has established a successful 13-year relationship with the investment community enhanced by an extensive background in operations, purchasing, and environmental affairs."
 Witco has recently acquired for approximately $440 million two divisions of Schering AG Berlin which has more than doubled its international revenues and increased total revenues by one third. In addition, the acquisition added 10 manufacturing facilities, increasing to 65 the plants the company operates in 12 countries. As senior vice president for external affairs, Mr. Soderlind will continue to direct investor relations, public relations, public relations, and marketing communications, adding a more global thrust to these responsibilities.
 Mr. Soderlind is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He serves as first vice chairman of the board of directors and is on the executive advisory committee of the Chemical Industry Council of New Jersey. He is a member of the National Investor Relations Institute, is on several committees of the Chemical Manufacturers association, and is a past governor and treasurer of the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association.
