OES can also accommodate a limited number of media representatives on an overnight field search exercise Feb. 6-7. This will involve a full-pack hike beginning at 1:30 p.m. to a bivouac site 2-1/2 miles from Kirkwood, overnight camping in tents, and a search dog rescue demonstration from 7:30-11:00 a.m. the next morning (Feb. 7). Please RSVP to 916-427-6659 by Thursday, Jan. 30 if you wish to go on the overnight.)
Background: Early this month a family of four was rescued by a search team after being snowbound for four days in the Sierra. Last May a Mariposa couple was found dead in their snowbound car in the same general area. In March a search near Kirkwood for two snowmobilers was unsuccessful; their bodies were found three months later.
Each winter, the news is filled with stories like this -- people lost in California's mountains and wilderness areas during severe winter storms, searches lasting days or weeks, some with happy endings, others with tragic results. To train personnel in the specialized techniques necessary for winter searches conducted under demanding conditions, the California Office of Emergency Services originated its annual "Search Function -- Winter Operations" course. Since 1987, the agency has graduated more than 150 law enforcement officers and volunteer search personnel. The searches cited above were managed by OES graduates.
Event: Winter Search and Rescue Training News Media Briefing and Demonstration as part of the 1992 winter search and rescue course.
Includes overview of winter search training, winter wilderness survival tips, avalanche rescue, helicopter rescue, search dog rescue demonstration. In addition to the search and rescue training, search personnel will offer tips to the media to pass along to the public on precautions to take to avoid becoming lost, and actions to take when lost in a cold weather environment. News helicopters are welcome, but please advise us in advance if you will be flying in.
Participants: California Office of Emergency Services; Lemoore Naval Air Station Mountain Search and Rescue Team; California National Guard Air Operations; California Highway Patrol Valley Division Air Operations; Wilderness Finders Inc. (WOOF); California Wing, Civil Air Patrol; local law enforcement officers; volunteers
